Gilbert was a cousin to Arabel. Gilbert was born and served as a selectman in the Town of Orange, NH for many years including 1851 plus before and after that year as indicated in the town records. His fourth wife was Sarah Lowell. He was living in Win
chester, MA at the time of this marriage and was 70 years of age and Sarah was 69. Gilbert was a carpenter by trade. His birth location is recorded in the Town of Canaan, NH book of births, deaths, and marriages p. 49 under this listing of his daughter Florence's birth. This listing also lists the birth place of the parents. In the History of Canaan, NH by Wallace p 692 his name appears on the "Enrolled List, 1864" . Kingston Hadley has his middle name spelled as "Steven" which James R. Hadley believes is incorrect.
His wives were; 1st Catherine Andrews, 2nd Margaret Somers, 3rd Arabel Currier and 4th Sarah Lowell. He resided in Orange, NH and then moved to Worcester, MA where he spent the greatest part of his life, With his brother and father, he built the original M. E. Church in Canaan, NH. He was a prominent Odd Fellow. He served as Decon and Treasurer of the church to which he belonged. He was a Representative to the NH Legislature from Orange, NH During the Civil War he was active in training the local recruits, serving as Captain of the Canaan, NH recruits.
